此由李瑞明博士捐贈的藏本，為李博士就全書內容作校對時的用書，內頁附有由李博士親筆訂正需要修改的地方，隨書亦夾附"補遺和勘誤"的補充資料，以備作將來再版之用。

嶺南大學自1888 年創校於廣州，其間的變遷，不單表述了嶺南的事跡，亦説明了近代中國歷史的一段重要里程。嶺南悠長的歷史，自然亦有大量的有關文獻。嶺南與世界各地交往頻繁，資料亦流散各地。由於史料的卷帙浩繁，如果沒有一個指引作為按圖索麟，研究嶺南歷史的學者恐怕只能浮光掠影，而無法從事深入客觀的研究。

有見及此，1947年超社校友李瑞明博士義務編成這本《嶺南大學文獻目錄》。這書除了提供檢閱查索嶺南歷史檔案方便之外，李博士更將他珍藏的許多文獻附錄書内供參考。除李博士外，陸建源博士、伍沾德博士、陸趙鈞鴻博士、馬幼坦教授及劉靖之教授亦協助參予編輯出版。

內容包含由1884-1887年間由 Rev. A. P. Happer 及 Rev. B. C. Henry 於美國紐約成立董事局, 並於1888年成立〈格致書院〉起始, 及至民國時期前後20年多間, 嶺南大學的發展史。
