據信中內容, 署名紅灰兒女的寄信人同為嶺南校友, 於信中表示敬仰李瑞明學長「為神為國為嶺南」的紅灰精神, 並附上1988年1月22日刊於《人民日報》海外版第六6版, 由該報記者陳禹山撰寫題為「「嶺南牛」李瑞明」的剪報。
李瑞明於來信信封底寫上:「根據核對三藩市嶺南同學會《簡報》讀者來函字跡, 肯定此信是美國馬利蘭巴的摩爾李炎全的手筆」。
